“There is no greater and more
living resonator of sound than the human body. Sound has
an effect on each atom of the body, for each atom resounds.” -Hazrat
Inayat Khan, The Music of Life (1967)
As my former teacher used to say, “We must create new words
or redefine our current words to reflect the change in the energy
of these times”. We tend to use the words “frequency” and “vibration” interchangeably
in any discussion around sound therapy – particularly in
metaphysical circles. However, these are really two distinctively
different attributes which “overlap”.
Many of us have experienced that exquisite sense of “quickening” that
comes from a “spiritual encounter”. We tend to express
the feeling as a “vibration” – as in “that
place has some really good vibrations”. Although you may
feel a sense of what could be termed a “vibration” when
you encounter something, or someone that you resonate with, the “quickening” or
physical sensation that you feel is actually a result of that resonance,
not the resonance itself. The “good vibrations” you
are feeling is a physical manifestation of a positive resonance
involving a band of much higher frequencies resonating in sympathy.
It’s like watching a tree swaying in the wind – you
can’t actually SEE the wind, but rather the resulting physical
effect the wind has on the tree.Vibration is a subset of frequencies
that falls in the bandwidth that can specifically be perceived
by the physical human body. Although there is a tremendously wide
spectrum of frequencies of all variety that impact the human body
on a continuous basis, only those that can be felt at our “mass
density” level are vibrational. For example, even though
at this very moment it is likely that a number of microwave frequencies
are passing through your body, you do not specifically experience
these frequencies physically as “vibration” because
they are too high. Accordingly, the term “oscillation” rather
than “vibration” may be used to differentiate physical
from non-physical perception, and to raise the awareness of which
energy spectrum we are dealing with when we discuss the field of
sound therapy and the lesser-known aspect of sound known as physioacoustics.
Physioacoustics is a scientific method of applying low frequency
stimulation to the human body in such a way as to obtain desired
emotional or physical effects. It may be thought of as the science
which takes the active ingredients out of “music” and
concentrates them into a pure form to motivate or to heal – it
sort of feels like a “sonic massage”.
A discussion of physioacoustics usually leads us to the most
critical physical, (and energetic), principle of sound – that which
is known as resonance. A resonance occurs when two or more tuned
frequency systems interact in such a way as to transfer energy.
This principle of resonance is one of the most critical factors
associated with why sound therapy is such a powerful modality.
The term “sound” indicates the lowest bandwidth of
our total frequency spectrum. As such, the property known as sound
has the profound ability to penetrate any substance and to move
matter at the molecular level. In this way, sound can alter our “reality” at
a much more fundamental level because it can penetrate and move
though solid matter. As energetic beings, we are in essence a collection
of broad-spectrum frequency generators, and our physical bodies
are in effect large resonant chambers. Therefore, we can induce
very profound energetic transfers at every level of our multidimensional
selves by resonating our bodies with sound.
In my sound therapy practice I use a great deal of low frequency
sound and physioacoustic vibration because low frequencies have
a tendency to createexcitations and resonances of an infinite number
of higher harmonically-related frequencies. By using subharmonic
frequencies, one can cause an excitation of any mathematically
proportional frequency above it – and the higher frequencies
will actually “pick out” the appropriate low frequency
and resonate Everything that occupies physical space possesses
multiple resonance frequencies. Our physical body structures, (i.e.
bones, muscles, organs, etc.), are no different. |
Each structure has
a band of characteristic resonance frequencies that is continually
changing as we evolve. By energizing the human body using sound,
we are essentially resonating the body at the structural level.
So although by and large, our bodies do operate at aband of characteristic
frequencies far beyond the audio spectrum, these higher frequencies
are harmonically related to a set of common lower base audible
frequencies to which are harmonically related. So, by imparting
the appropriate low frequency sound energy related to the characteristic
sympathetic resonance of the organized mass structures of the
body, we are not only vibrationally massaging these internal
structures and stimulating their innate capacity to detoxify,
but we are also providing a harmonic base related to multiple
resonant frequencies of the energetic systems that operate
at much higher frequencies. Through the centuries, the stones
and walls present at many sacred sites have retained energetic
information stored within their very structure at the molecular
level. Adept shamans are capable of accessing this information
by using resonant sound, which is one of the reasons that some
orders of monks tone and chant during ceremonies at these sites.
Similarly, YOU have information locked within you at the molecular
level. By allowing sound to move through you, the information
stored within your physical structure can be accessed. As an
energetic being, you store this information in the form of a
feeling or an emotional energy. In many cases, this emotional
energy has been stored in the body’s energetic memory at the cellular level,
and has been carried forth from lifetime to lifetime. Sound is
an excellent means of transmitting and stimulating the experiencing
of these various emotions, which causes the emotions to then “bubble” to
the surface of our energetic field. When you connect to your feelings,
you connect to your entire chakra system, which then allows you
to understand the information available to you within and without
your energetic body. In this way, emotions that are no longer appropriate
may then be released. This in turn, will prevent these emotions
from manifesting as a physical ailment. Using sound in this way
can bring about a rearrangement of your structural essence at its
most fundamental levels, and create an opening for information
from Source to flow in. The opening and clearing of blocked or
repressed energetic centers will enhance one’s ability to
integrate higher information and accelerate the ascension process.
Also, by releasing inappropriate energies you are allowing an access
to a greater knowledge and wisdom that is stored within you to
take their place. As you allow sound to play your body, you are
opening yourself to rediscovering the frequencies that are connected
to something within and without: of Light, of the Divine Love,
of other worlds. Your body is reminded of frequencies that it has
longed for – which the sound has reminded it of. Frequency
and vibration, no matter how you choose to define or distinguish
them intellectually, imply the most profound principle in the universe – that
of sympathetic resonance. As such, resonance is a metaphor for
the energetic expression of the Universe at its most fundamental
level, or “the way things REALLY work”. And just as
with Holy Father/Mother God, resonance does not imply conditions
or judgment in any way – not good or bad - it just IS. It’s
ALL about resonance!
