Heat waves and sultry humidity make
tempers flare as the dog days of summer loom. Witches know it’s
preferable not to puddle in silent misery — that the Sun’s
reign is a fine time to help ourselves chill out and help others
by ‘blessing the fire out.’
Many more challenging recipes are in my The
Goodly Spellbook: Olde Spells For Modern Problems, but heat
is oft accompanied by malaise, so make these easier herbal concoctions
to magically soothe sunburn, drench yourself in comforting moisture
inside and out, and calm the cranky in your realm!
Cooling Fruit and Veggie Bath
1 cucumber
1 grated lime rind
Thinly slice 1 cucumber. Place slices in a paper bag and add
inside it the zest (grated rind) of 1 lime. Shake bag to coat
slices with zest.
Toss all slices but 2 into a tepid, water-filled bathtub, Add
1 teaspoonful of almond, hemp, or olive oil. Get in tub, lean
back, place remaining 2 slices on your closed eyelids, soak and
relax!
Harmony Supper Salad
Whole green olives and grape tomatoes
Sliced mushrooms, cucumbers, and boiled eggs
Washed baby bib lettuce, iceberg lettuce, dandelion leaves, sprouts,
and chives
Crumbled goat cheese
Diced, precooked ham
1/2 cup uncooked herbed stuffing crumbs
Mix any amount or combination of the above soft foods to suit.
Toss and serve with dressing of choice if desired, and Iced

Iced Herbal Tea Delight
1 family size (or 3 small) tea bags
6 to 8 assorted herbal teas (peppermint, passion flower, chamomile,
zinger, green tea, and orange pekoe work well together, for instance)
Honey to taste
Boil a teakettle full of water. Pour hot water in a pitcher
and steep tea bags together, covered with a top or lid to retain
steam for 7 minutes. Remove bags and add honey to taste (even
lemon slices if desired). Serve chilled poured over ice cubes.
Makes a liter or more.
Sunburn Soother
1/8 cup almond oil
19 drops tea tree oil
9 drops rose essential oil
Mix and apply to burn as needed to hydrate skin and prevent blistering.
Fair Hair
Great moisturizer for summer sun, fan or chlorine pool-damaged
hair!
Jar half-filled with dried rose hips
Almond oil
Fill jar to rim with oil. Keep lidded in sun-filled window until
oil turns pale pink (2 - 3 weeks). Drain hips from oil.
Wet hair with warmish water. Massage in oil on scalp and throughout
hair 1 to 2 times per week; leave on overnight with your hair
wrapped in a towel or shower cap. Wash and condition as normal
in the morning.
Body/Face Splash
Jar half-filled with dried rose petal infused water (women) or
sliced, dehydrated cucumbers (men)
Liquid Witch Hazel
Strain petals from water and fill remainder of jar with liquid
Witch Hazel. Shake and transfer liquid to an empty spray bottle.
Spray face (eyes closed) as needed during hot flashes or sweats,
etc.
